Milia (milium)

A milium is a benign, small, white or yellow cyst that generally occurs on the nose, chin, and cheeks in clusters. Multiple cysts are called milia. Milia are usually not painful or itchy, but if irritated, they can appear red and pronounced. Milia do not usually cause long-term problems but the correct treatment by the dermatologists at Skin and Laser Dermatology Center can improve their appearance and reduce their risk of recurrence.

Why do milia occur?

Milia occurs when a common skin protein - keratin - or skin flakes are trapped under the skin. In older children and adults, milia are associated with damage to the skin including burns, blistering injuries, long-term sun damage, and long-term steroid creams. Aging and the skin losing its natural ability to exfoliate can also cause milia.

Who is most likely to develop milia?

Milia can occur in newborn babies and then it peaks again after puberty and affects people of all ages and both sexes.

What kind of treatment is possible?

In some cases, milia often resolve spontaneously and without treatment. For those where the milia persist, there are several treatment options available, including the use of comedone extractors, instruments designed to remove milia, topical treatments, chemical peels, and lasers.
