Nail fungus, also called onychomycosis, is a common infection of the nail by fungi. A fungal infection in the nail can cause the nail to change color, get thicker, or become warped. The nail may break easily and over time, may even become separated from the nail bed. It is important to have your nails medically evaluated in order to identify potential infections, as well as skin cancers and other skin conditions, that can occur in the nails. Schedule an appointment today at Skin and Laser Dermatology Center with our board-certified providers by calling (703) 893-1114.

How can I lower the chances of developing a fungal nail infection?
Keeping hands and feet clean and dry, and maintaining short and clean nails can reduce the likelihood of developing a fungal nail infection. It is also important to not share nail clippers with other people or walk barefoot in communal areas such as locker rooms or public showers. Biting or chewing nails, cutting cuticles, and biting hangnails should also be avoided, because they contribute to the spread of infections. Finally, wearing shoes made of breathable materials and sweat-absorbing socks can lower the chance of developing a fungal infection.
How can I go to a nail salon and reduce the chance of getting a fungal nail infection?
Ensuring the salon is clean and licensed by your state’s cosmetology board are important when selecting a nail salon. The nail salon should be sterilizing its instruments after each use, or you can bring your own.

Our Clients Say
My eyelid surgery results for the facial wrinkles look very natural. Very skilled dermatologic surgeon.
Dr. Bajoghli always has time for his patients, you never feel that he is rushing you and after you leave if you have any concerns he is very responsive to the point of giving out his cell phone number. I can’t say enough about him and his staff.
Nurse Rassmussen answers all of my questions, listens to my concerns, examines my skin, goes over my treatment protocol and gets me out the door quickly, but without feeling rushed, so that I can get on with the rest of my day. I have already recommended this practice to a couple of friends, and I will continue to do so with confidence.
I really appreciate the polite and professional service that Dr. Bajoghli’s practice provides in my dermatologic health. All of his staff make you feel welcome and are concerned for your care.
