Freckles are small, pigmented areas of skin that are medically referred to as ephelides. They are small, sharply defined, flat (macular) marks on the skin. The color of freckles can vary from red to tan to light brown and can number from a few to hundred. Freckles usually occur in childhood after sun-exposure. Freckles are themselves benign (harmless) and do not have symptoms.

Individuals with freckles should have routine skin examinations as freckles are a characteristic of skin types that are at greater risk for skin cancer. Additionally, for individuals looking to minimize the appearance of their freckles, the providers and expert skin care professionals at Skin and Laser Dermatology Center have a number of treatment methods for all skin types. Let us know how we can address your medical and cosmetic needs by calling today for an appointment.

What causes freckles?

Freckles are largely due to genetics but they can be induced by sunlight. To limit freckling, it is best to regularly use sunscreen and avoid sun exposure and sunburns.

Where are freckles most commonly found?

Freckles are most common on sun-exposed areas such as the face, arms, chest, legs, and back.

Who is more likely to develop freckles?

Fair skinned individuals and blond or red haired individuals are most likely to develop freckles. Freckles are genetic so they can be passed down through families. Spending time in the sun also increases the chances of developing freckles.

My freckles seem to come and go. Why is that?

Freckles can occur in greater numbers and become more pigmented with sun exposure. Conversely, they can lighten with sun avoidance.

Can freckles become dangerous?

Freckles are themselves benign (harmless). However, freckles can be a strong indicator for melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancers because of the increased exposure to the sun’s ultraviolet rays. Hence, patients with many freckles should be screened regularly by a dermatologist for new or changing moles and pigmented lesions.

How can I cosmetically improve the appearance of my freckles?

The appearance of freckles can be cosmetically improved with a number of treatments including:

  • Certain laser treatments can be effective for improving the appearance of freckles. There are a number of different lasers that may be recommended depending on the pigmented area and unique factors relating to each patient. Some of the lasers commonly recommended at Skin and Laser Dermatology Center for melasma are Picoway lasers and Venus Versa
  • Chemical peels and Melanage Ultra Peels are excellent treatments for rejuvenating the skin and reducing the appearance of freckles by promoting cell turnover.
  • Cryotherapy (liquid nitrogen)

During the cosmetic consultation, your provider will recommend the best way to reduce the appearance of your freckles. Call today to schedule a consultation.

When will I see fully realized results?

The skin may look improved even one week after treatment, but full results will be seen 3-6 months later, as new collagen is synthesized.

Dr. Bajoghli always has time for his patients, you never feel that he is rushing you and after you leave if you have any concerns he is very responsive to the point of giving out his cell phone number. I can’t say enough about him and his staff.

Nurse Rassmussen answers all of my questions, listens to my concerns, examines my skin, goes over my treatment protocol and gets me out the door quickly, but without feeling rushed, so that I can get on with the rest of my day. I have already recommended this practice to a couple of friends, and I will continue to do so with confidence.
